Philco 118B Cabinet resto
#1

Hello, Ron: I have a 118B I recently did a chassis resto on. It is a FANTASTIC player now.

However, the cabinet will be "challenging." I must "reskin the cabinet side about 1/2 way down one side of the cabinet.

What kind of veneer should I use for this?

Additionally, what color toners do you recommend. I think the sides and portions of the front would be dark or extra dark walnut, the two "scallops" in front a light walnut or even left natural. BUT, the original center portion appeared to be more of a red color.

Since you mention "scallops" I assume you mean a 118B cathedral, not tombstone.

Walnut veneer, a plain type (not anything fancy) is what you need for the cabinet side.

As for coloring, let's look at a similar 144B set:

As you can see, the majority of the front panel needs Extra Dark Walnut or Maison Brown, as will the bottom trim on the front and sides. The color of the lighter parts of the front panel should be done in Medium Walnut. Finally, the top/sides of the cabinet (cannot be seen in the photo above) should be Perfect Brown.

And don't forget those accent stripes at the bottom, they are light tan.

This is another Barry Jones cabinet restoration; as usual, he did an excellent job.
