Possible repairman's mistake it doesn't make since to put a .01 inline with the .25 .
Merry Christmas. Happy Hanuka.

OK, on to the condenser blocks, but first, a shameless plug. If you don't have these condenser tools, you really need to get a set, they make this job so much easier. A little twist of the cutter tool cuts the wires, heat the block and push the guts out with the punch tool. Then clean the terminals and install a new capacitor.

I simply gutted it, cleaned and reinstalled the empty block. [Image: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/4917...e75e_k.jpg]Philco 90 restoration by Steve Davis, on Flickr Steve M R Radios C M Tubes

Steve nice tools i got some old wooden file handles around i could make a cheap and dirty copy been using a modified pin punch and hair dryer to get the tar out of these.
Merry Christmas. Happy Hanuka.

About half of the "Dogbone" resistors were out of tolerance, I went ahead and replaced all.
[Image: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/4920...404d_k.jpg]Philco 90 Restoration by Steve Davis, on Flickr The filter capacitors were aluminum can replacements from years ago. So, the next step is off to my storage area to find a couple of Mershons to restuff. Steve M R Radios C M Tubes

What came originally , filter capacitor-wise, in this radio? Would they have been those Mershon capacitors?...or something marked "Philco"?
12-11-2019, 03:36 PM
Jake, originally, it would have had Mershon or Sprague.

Ok,...thanks.
...so is there a way I can determine if the 610 originally came with Sprague, Mershon, Solar capacitors,. . . or cans branded Philco ?

Looking through my "Someday Kit" I found a 70 chassis that had a nice pair of Mershons it wanted to donate.

First, I cleaned and polished them. I taped one end to protect the can from being marked by the jaws of the lathe chuck. After polishing one end, I turned it around and finished polishing.

I'm using a 1/4 inch brass bolt for the terminal. Here I'm drilling the head of the bolt so I can solder in a number 12 buss wire.

Steve those Mershons look great! I have a 70 with Mershons that I will get to in the future and would like to know if after polishing them, do you spray them with clear lacquer to keep them bright? Thanks.

Ron, I was wondering the same thing. This morning, I look at them, they appear to already be tarnishing. I still have to stuff the second one after that, I think I will spray them.

If you've ever polished copper you'll find they need to be coated or they'll turn brown in no time.
12-13-2019, 10:14 PM
I installed two 4.7uf film capacitors in the other can to be used as the input filter. I then sprayed a coat of lacquer on cans and installed them in the chassis.
[Image: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/4921...b6bc_k.jpg]100_0192 by Steve Davis, on Flickr After one more good looking over, I'm ready for the "Smoke Test". I hooked up the speaker and brought it up slowly. [Image: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/4921...9ba0_k.jpg]100_0194 by Steve Davis, on Flickr Oh no, I have a problem! The screen grid on one of the 47s is glowing bright orange! I quickly turned the radio off. Now, this is what happens when you get old. I bought this speaker on eBay and for some reason, I forgot to test it! One half of the primary of the output transformer is open. The speaker is not correct for this chassis anyway. This one is for an early 90 but, there is almost no hope of finding a speaker for a late 90. I will probably wind up buying universal replacement transformer. So for now, I pulled the speaker out of my Philco 20 as it is the only P-P speaker that I have that has the correct field coil resistance. So I try again. Wow! Its talking! I'm surprised, I figured the alignment would be so far off (remember I had the tuning condenser completely apart) that it wouldn't pick up anything but, I have three or four stations coming in weakly. Maybe tomorrow evening I will have time to do the alignment. Steve M R Radios C M Tubes

Hmmmm....those caps sure look nice! What is that machine you did that on?...is that a lathe?
