Today's find. 40-205
#1

Found this today for.  After a quick dusting and a little Olde English, she doesn't look half bad.  IT plays too.  I know, I know.....I will get it restored. But when I went to pick it up, they had it playing. It sounded great, with lots of volume, and good tone. Picked up a ton of stations, unlike some of my other radios.

Its a 40-205xx.  Not sure of the proper suffix letters.  I think this might be the one that took the wireless remote. Not sure.

I'm kind of on a roll this week.

Nice looking...

Anybody here own one? The volume is locked on this one. I think it has something to do with the Mystery Control setup. There is a little prong that sticks out and doesn't let the volume dial move more than a 1/4 inch or so. I can see that if it wasn't sticking out, the dial would spin freely. I can't get it to move out of the way.

Ok follks.....REVELATION TIME!!!!!!

The volume wheel is just an up and down SWITCH!!!!  I was expecting it to be a rheostat with a lot of movement, but it just goes UP a little bit and DOWN a little bit, to make contact with what is seen in my photo. That prong sticking out is what moves it up and down a little bit to make contact.  I needed to WAIT for the motor to turn the volume up or down.  AND I wondered how you turn it off because there's no on off switch.  Guess what?  I hold DOWN on the wheel until the volume goes all the way off, and them wait a few seconds, and the power is turned off.  SO there is nothing wrong with the volume switch, it was just OPERATOR ERROR.

Nice radio. It looks in really good shape. Nice find! Thanks for sharing.

The power volume control uses a 2 ph motor. By exchanging the motor condenser connections the rotation changes, that is what the up/down volume control does.

Outside of other possible mechanical issues, the condenser for the motor usually dries up so no rotation or very little torque...

It is a non-polarized but I have used two regular electrolytics back to back, doubles the voltage rating and halves the mf rating...

If there is a large, open wire loop at the bottom of the cabinet, that is the receive antenna for the wireless remote...

YMMV
