Replacing 41-280 dial lamp wiring
#1

The 3 dreaded rubber insulated dial lamp wires on the right side of the glass dial have to be replaced on this 41-280 chassis I'm working on. Always before, when I've had to replace dial lamp wiring, I just went to my "junque" box and grabbed one that I had salvaged from old chassis. But this chassis has the bulb socket clips that have to be oriented a certain direction to fit on the prong they rest on so they illuminate the dial glass properly. I have nothing in my "j" box that replaces them. All this means I have to remove the bulb socket from the old wire and install new wire directly to the bulb socket.

Can I assume it's a matter of heating the inside bulb contact in the socket so it melts the solder around the old wire and then sticking new solder in there and inserting the replacement wire while the solder is liquid?

Your experience/thoughts?

Thanks,
Art

Art,
Go to Ron's Tech Section and click on Rebuilding Philco Pilot Lamp Assemblies. A nice little tutorial. It works great as I did it for the identical type pilot lite assemblies you are describing on my 41-295.

Thanks for re-posting that link, Ron; I knew that was going to be a challenge that I will be facing on my 40-190. Icon_rolleyes

All through with that dial lamp wire replacement chore. Cleaning of a "tar" chassis took me 2 days with Mr. GoJo. Rusty speaker housing also responded well to Mr. G. Now on to the underside which I can handle without making my fingers brown. Boy, what a CROWDED chassis!! Icon_eek

Here it is now:

(Dial string was installed after this pic was taken.)

All bands and pushbuttons are working. I still need a dial pointer and chassis bolts.

Art,

Do you still need me to look for the pointer?

Yes, I do please. I have some others I scavenged off of radios in the past but I cannot make them fit. Hope you find one you can send me!!! Icon_razz
