philco 48-482
#1

does anyone know who makes the lower base strips for old philco wooden radios? i dont know why every wooden radio MUST be placed on a wet basement floor for years but thats whats happened.the upper is still very reasonable but the floor is shot.it seems some years ago i ran into a website that sold these for cathedrals and tombstones but i cant find it now. any clue's are welcome.

well as no one replied i guess they arent available. i found a cabinet shop that could fab the outer strips with router and handsaw and a carpenters square i reconstructed it from philippine mahogany and 9mm plywood. i havent installed it yet as i'm not to sure if its correct dimensionally. the original was so far gone accurate measurement was very difficult. what need to know is the amount the upper case overhangs the base on the sides and the front i have about a 16th. its easy at this stage to make a bit smaller.

Hello, If you are asking about the piece with the decal on it, here is a picture of the front of mine.
I measured the piece and it is 17"x2"x3/4" thick. Hope this helps you.

Here in the states there is not much of a collector's market for the 48-482. For that matter anything post '38 or so for the Philco. Still plenty of post war sets around that nobody wants. Most of us have to use good judgement in deciding what we take in for restoration. Sometime it comes down to are skill sets vs level or damage. And also how much we want to invest into a particular project.

Some like me pickup basket cases cause I like a challenge. Or I see something others don't that don't involve dollar signs.

I just mention as a possible reason for getting no responses to your post.

When my pals were reading comic books
I was down in the basement in my dad's
workshop. Perusing his Sam's Photofoacts
Vol 1-50 admiring the old set and trying to
figure out what all those squiggly meant.

Now I think I've got!

I tried to give him at least one response. Not sure if it's what he needs.

i bought it on ebay for 20$. i do these and others as a hobby. the set came here at no cost to me. a cursory inspection shows it to be unmolested. i did say cursory. the speaker is ok. the upper is just fine. the money spent is insignificant to rebuild these as opposed to restoring english motorcycles, now THATS pricey. but does anyone have one they can flip over and give me an idea about the amount of "reveal" the upper case has to the bottom? i can get parts that are similar in function for for a 84b but not this so i had them made for a whopping 200 pesos or 4 bucks and change. and yes i do like the challenge of rebuilding the abused and mistreated things i come across. it reminds me of the numerous, thankless magician tricks i pulled off while serving in the us navy as a GSE mechanic and electrician!

even a picture of the bottom is all i really need

Hi falcon123! I restored a 48-482 some years ago. They are an EXCELLENT radio once you get them squared away, but they can be a fussy radio to work on, especially aligning the IF. It can be done by following the instructions in the Philco repair documents carefully. Here is a link to my thread on restoring mine... it was the first radio I wrote about on here. https://philcoradio.com/phorum/showthrea...ght=48-482
