37-610 dial removal
#1

Hi guy's
Have a Philco 37-610 table radio with the round dial and escutchion.
Can anyone tell me how the round dial and glass is removed?
Want to refinish it.
Thanks, murf

Press the brown ring w/the palm of your hand. Give it a twist to the left and it should pop off. Glass will fall out. Or maybe it's the right, you'll figure it out. OBTW on most of the '37 model the front panels are photofinish (big decal) and if you strip them you'll be stuck with a very light not so stainable wood underneath.

Hi Terry,
Thanks for the info.
I know its photo finish, but it is scratched up pretty good.
Wonder if anyone sells sheets of photo finish material?
Could apply a sheet of veneer I suppose
Have recapped it and it plays strong.

murf, take a look at the photofinish section of the main site here. It has information on how to deal with the problem...

Hey Kevin,
Along with what Mike posted have a look here: https://www.philcoradio.com/phorum/showt...?tid=22277

The tricky part is doing the stripes and making them level with the finish. Both doing the veneer and or painting to recreate is tedious. I've never done the veneer/inlay to recreate but have painted using several colors to achieve the proper look (or close to it). Did leather repair for abt 30 yrs and coloring process is similar.

>but it is scratched up pretty good
Sounds like an oxymoron. Is really good to be scratched up?? I digress.
If it's not too bad to you have a lot of time to kill this is what I did on a small cabinet. It will get you the basic steps to color and level it.

There was a company called "Re-faux Pro" or something like that. They have gone for a number of yrs now. Product was marginal and price was high. So you weren't missing out on anything.

Have some veneer, so going that route.
Got the radio for free and really don't care if it is not the original phoney finish. Mine will probably look better anyway.

Given what they supposedly charged fro the decals it would be cheaper to redo the front with real veneers. It looks like the decals on the 37-602 were intended to mimic olive burl, and Zebra wood, veneers.

Is this what your model looks like?

37-610

Mine was not photo finish. The lacquer was heavily scratched.

Have any pictures of yours. If anything I’m curious.

Mine is a tombstone.
I have put new veneer on the front.
Now to refinish the whole cabinet.
I can post a pic when its done.
