"Restore-A-Finish" question.
#1

Hi to all,
Has anybody ever used any of Howard's "Restore-A-Finish" products? If so, how well does it work? I saw it at a local DYI store and was considering trying it but it's a little pricey. Any input would be great, thanks!

I personally love the stuff......ESPECIALLY if combined with the howards "feed-n-wax"

my 37-650X BEFORE the howards treatment

and these are AFTER an application of the restore in "walnut" color and the feed-n-wax followed by a hand-buffing

that being said.........if you want a "factory fresh brand-new looking" finish howards IS NOT for you........

it gives it a more "well taken care of original but still 70+ years old" finish which I personally prefer (but thats just my opinion and you know what opinions are like)

Hey Scott,
Thanks for your reply. based on your photo's, I decided to go ahead and give "Restore-A-Finish" a try! That stuff is amazing!!
My recent find- a 38-4xx had an intact orirginal finish, just like your 37-650x. I couldn't believe how nice it turned out! I like to keep the original finish as well, if it can be made to look good again. I have several other set's I want to try this stuff on. Thanks again.

Hmmm. OK, I'm sold. I'll try it out.

I'm glad you were pleased with your results.....

one tip that you may have already noticed anyhow but since the wax is a "conditioner" as well sometimes the piece looks better after multiple coats..

I usually keep applying it untill it seems as tho the surface isn't "soaking it up" anymore then I'll wipe it down real good and let it sit for a day or 2 and put on ANOTHER coat ,let sit for 20 mins then wipe it down real good then followed by a hand buffing/polishing with a clean cloth

seems to work for me anyhow
#6

Do you use anything to clean the surface before applying this product? Seems like you'd want to get the 70+ years worth of dust and dirt off first.
#7

I usually the cabinet with a gentle rub down of mineral spirits and oooo steelwool.
#8

I've had good luck using GoJo hand cleaner followed up with mineral spirits.
#9

where do we get OOOO steel wool?

Or mineral spirit, for that matter.??

Most home improvement stores (Lowes, Home Depot, etc.) should have them on the paint / stain isle.

No, it's not a problem, just during certain condition it could show up. Yes, an internal tube short could do that too. ...morzh — 09:13 AM
