Philco 20?
#1

Howdy!

I am very new to radio restoration, and even newer to this forum.
Recently I have inherited a Philco Radio that I believe is a Philco Model 20. It has a couple broken tubes (24a and 71a) and some dings to the wood housing, but otherwise in good condition.

The sticker is worn where the model number is, but research indicates a model 20 (confirmation from one of you chaps would be nice).

I'll search the forums for a good place to buy replacement bulbs, but a response would be just as good.

Is there anything I should be worried about after I replace the bulbs, or should I just light it up after they are inserted?

Pics or it didn't happen:

Hello and welcome! That looks like a very nice Model 20 "Deluxe."

First off, it appears that the set's 80 rectifier tube is inserted in one of the 71A sockets (I am referring to the tube in the back of the chassis, between the remaining 71A and one of the cylindrical coil shields). The 80 goes in the socket at far right (viewing the chassis from the rear), behind the rectangular can which houses the filter capacitors.

By "bulbs," I assume you are referring to the tubes.

Sources of parts may be found here:

No, don't just plug it in and turn it on! Please read these pages first:

Hi Ron,

Good to meet a professional.
These links are exactly what I was looking for, I'll do some reading and post again if I have any questions.

Many thanks!

Hi and Welcome to the Phourm!
I'll mention a few of the common problems with the model 20. Open driver transformer #21,(if open must replace. Can be had without much trouble) RF coils #'s 2, 7, & 10 open primary (no biggie can be rewound by hand), Field coil #30 (if open must replace speaker. Original good ones are hard to find and $$$. Can be replaced with a modern part with some circuit changes).
Then there's all the regular stuff the resistor check/replace and cap replace. I just finished up a model 20 a month or two ago and I have a model 21 (same as the 20 just different output tubes) that I'm going to start in on soon.
