116B dial drive disassembly surprise
#16

Yup that's the late model or cost reduction model. Pretty much the only differences are the spkr & cabinet. It was the last of the 16/116 tabletop set which started in '33. In 37 and 38 the 116 continued as high fidelity consoles. The 37-116X code 121 sported manual tuning and a shadowgraph. They didn't sale as well as the code 122 which has "telladial" (preset) tuning. 1939 the 116 usher in the mystery tuning. The receiver circuit was down sized and is a mere shadow of it's predecessors. It does have a high tube count but it's do to the control circuits for the mystery tuning. After '39 no more 116.

In 1937 there was a set that replaced the 116B. The 37-670B https://philcoradio.com/gallery2/1937a/#Model_37-670B And continued thru '38.

Here's a link to all of the 16/116B's  http://www.tuberadioland.com/philco16B-t..._main.html  Pretty sure you can click on the pics at the bottom to read abt them.

I was down in the basement in my dad's
workshop. Perusing his Sam's Photofoacts
Vol 1-50 admiring the old set and trying to
figure out what all those squiggly meant.

Now I think I've got!

Hello mbhdesign,
As terry said you really do have your work cut out for you on this project also to bad that dial was not damaged like that .
I have a Zenith model 715 which had a nest under the chassis when I first got the set now that set will take some real will power !

you, are lucky that Philco looks in good shape under neath .

You can get a dial here I think  https://www.radiodaze.com/philco-116-116x-27-5107/ But it may take awhile...

Many thanks, Richard! I’m in for a treat for sure!

Fortunately, I was able to source a replacement dial a few months ago when I acquired the set.

Unfortunately, there’s a missing part of the band selection / dial drive system - I think it’s the dial belt tensioner.

I posted a Want Ad with a few pics to show what’s missing. https://philcoradio.com/phorum/showthrea...#pid191503

Without this part, there’s nothing for the dial drive belt to attach to.

Hello mbhdesign,
One thing I did not is your band switch control looked shorter in that photo .
Far as the dial belt tensioner goes if worst comes to worst you could fabricate something this where a 3-d printer might come in handy .

Hi mbhdesign, about 2 years ago I came across a 16B, the predecessor of your 116 at a local auction house. I knew it was one of Philco’s best at the time and ran over to it. Once I got to looking at it my enthusiasm waned. In addition to the cabinet falling apart, the stench emanating from it and the obvious rodent damage was a killer. I walked away! It was the only time I ever remember seeing one in the raw.

Ugh. I don’t blame you.

Here’s a few pics of my 116B cabinet. Worked on worse!
