Hello, I just picked up a Philco 38-2. It will probably be a while before I dig into it. What kind of problems am I likely to run into with the 11 tube console. It has a Magnetic Tuning switch. What does that do?

If I'm not mistaken the Philco magnetic tuning was another name for AFC. See:

Here's the Philco service bulletin for this model:

I go in to the chassis presuming all caps (mica excluded) are bad, and all resistors have probably drifted. I replace all the caps and resistors. They are the relatively inexpensive compared to what they can take out. Take care and BE HEALTHY! Gary

My approach is to check out the electronics and see if there is anything that may prevent the radio from functioning properly then check out the cabinet and do cabinet repairs first.
Chassis:
Check all coils for continuity and record their resistance on the schematic. Any coil that is open will have to be rewound or replaced. Test all resistors for value within ten percent. Identify them on your list or the schematic. Identify the electrolytic and paper/wax capacitors and put them on your list. Check condition of the speaker.
Order parts. While the parts are coming get that cabinet work done. Make it beautiful again. Then do the chassis and make your beautiful cabinet sing.

Thanks Rob and Gary. That is pretty much what I do. I was wondering if there were any problem spots with the radio.
