Philco model 60
#1

Hi guys! I’m a new member here but have been using your resources for quite some time. Hopefully I can get some help with some model 60 issues that I am having. Bought this radio at my local vintage electronics expo a couple of years ago. I tested all the tubes and replaced the weak ones. Rebuilt the can capacitors. Rebuilt all the capacitor blocks. Freed up the seized tuning cap and replaced the mounting bushings. Cleaned the controls. Rewound the primary winding on the antenna coil. The problem is that when attempting to align, I can only faintly hear the signal generator through the speaker. The radio will not pick up any stations. I have schematics galore, but none have any voltage specs as to what I should have at the field coil speaker. Also I am unsure if the oscillator is actually working and cannot find something showing which pins on the coil are for, so I can test it. I have a lot of experience with tube and solid state radios and amps but this one has me stumped. I keep double checking everything I touched, convinced that I did something wrong but not finding anything. This was a deluxe mouse house when I got it and someone else had been in it before. Any suggestions or recommendations would greatly be appreciated!

Model 60 struck again Icon_lol

Welcome to the Phorum!

Above is the article on Model 60. Could be of some use.
Now.

First, "when attempting to align", do you mean the IF modulated frequency you were trying to put through?
Try the IF first. Attempt aligning the IF filters in the sequence shown in the alignment procedure.
If this fails, then we proceed further with digging.

Yes, standard alignment procedure. I can get the minuscule tone to vary when adjusting the trimmers. But you almost have to put your ear up to the speaker to hear it. I am pretty good with the AA5 radios, but the field coil ones are not my favorite to diagnose. This unit has never worked since I got it. I am currently at work and don’t have it in front of me. Won’t be able to get on it until tomorrow or Sunday. I have a hunch that this might be more than one problem.

Welcome to the Phorum, Radios1340!  The oscillator coil on the 60 is a common culprit.  I just bought a 60B (June 1934) brass escutcheon from Mark Oppat.  As I purchased it he said "count on rewinding the oscillator coil'.  Plenty of tutorials are here on the subject, and lots of help available.  Take care and BE HEALTHY!   Gary

Yes, Mark belongs to the same Michigan Antique Radio Club that I do. I suspect that the oscillator coil is in need of a rewind. I had found the antenna coil specs here and repaired that one, but have not located the same information about the oscillator coil. Need to know the terminal orientation, wire gauge, and ohms reading.

This is my thread on 60 from 2016.
I had to rewind the osc coil, and I actually counted the turns and then rewound it.

You could use these data, or, if the turns are all there (even if corroded), just unwind, note the orientation and this is not hard at all. One-layer coils, very few turns.

I'm also a member of MARC. Did you attend the Vintage Electronics Expo in Waterford, MI last month? That's where I got my 60. Take care and BE HEALTHY! Gary

Yes I was there. I got some real bargains there. Plus a Zenith 7G605 clipper that I have been trying to find for a fair price for about 10 years. I bought this Philco 60 at one of the meets about 6 years ago. Almost never miss the VEE. Finally got around to performing more testing and found that the field coil is bad. Should be 1140 ohms, tests at 1.1k ohms. Found a replacement on the bay, but it is like $60 after tax and shipping. I wonder if anyone here on the phorum has one that they want to part with for a better price. The replacement is more than I paid for the whole radio.

You have one stringent criterion for a FC being bad. That would be 5 stars in my book.

Duh! I guess I can’t read an ohm meter today. I took the oscillator coil out and will take some readings tomorrow.

Plus I forgot that I have a spare complete Philco FC speaker, that would work perfectly, now that I don’t need it. Got it at the VEE about 10 years ago. Hard to keep track of the inventory!
