I thought your brown RCA portable looked familiar, I have one that is very similar, the RCA-Victor model BX-55. I too ended up with it as a sort of accident, a fellow I know offered me a few boxes of radios, and that was in with it. It has the same problem that yours did, the filter condenser can is shot.
