A little survey: For those with lots of noise in their house, are you wired with type NM cable (Romex) without metallic conduit or type AC (BX) armored cable or metallic conduit? For those with little or no noise, same question.

Hello Mr Fixxr,
in my house I have Romex!

I have little noise, if any. Unless I run the light on my workbench.
I have Romex only, the wire in conduits are those that go down outside the walls in the basement. Which are bery few.

I have mostly romex with some plastic conduit, and I have high noise. Most of my noise is from the neighbor across the street their light dimmers. Recently I’m getting some kind of white noise which is not from my house.

I tell the Solar people to get lost when they show up. If I had solar I’d be doomed.

I stopped using my longwire for BCB reception and rely on radios with built in antennas. I moved my Zenith 8-S-463 to the dining room, and with its turnable antenna, I can null the noise. Battery sets seem to do the best.

I have mainly romex throughout after I replaced knob and tube 20 years ago except my attic is still knob and tube. The only thing up there are 2 ceiling lights. The only noise I get is from the self reading meter the power company put in years ago!

Tony, I wonder if that is because:
1. Battery sets are not connected to the power line.
2. More modern sets have a "ferrite loopstick" that, I think, is somehow more immune to EMI. I have a lot less issues with transistor or even tube sets with a loopstick than with either the usual flat coil or external antenna.

Folks like Dale, John Mike, etc. with Commercial Broadcast or HAM experience, or EE degrees may know better. I am speaking from empirical evidence.

I agree that if you are not hooked up to the AC line there is less noise. All my battery sets are pretty much able to null out the noise. It may not be the ideal direction for the station, but it becomes 100% readable.

My electric service feed runs parallel to my driveway, and as soon as I back my car in, you can hear it in the cars radio. Definitely riding on the 3 service feeds on the one transformer.

I think the white noise is from the cable TV distribution line. I disconnected the cable feed at the arrestor box so it wouldn’t carry into the house. I doubt the two fiber internet feeds carry noise, as there is no RF noise source there, but I could be wrong. My fiber seems quiet.

My house is old and has a lot of the original 2 conductor wiring. And yeah, it's noisy. I'm really starting to think my hum is coming from the line rather than the house. I might take it to another house and try to see if I'm chasing a ghost.

My house (72 years old) is wired in 2 conductor Romex. One transformer serves about 6 houses here. At least one neighbor on this transformer has solar power. Hum is a BIG issue here.

Since I'm suddenly jumping back into some TV projects, and re-reading the previous comments, I recall having hum issues with AM radios and my AM transmitter. I'm starting to believe our AC line is dirty. I just purchased a Tiny SA for alignments, but read I can also use it to sniff around for various signals. Still learning. If I get a chance, I'll throw that little Emerson back in the case and post a few pics of her all lit up.
