Philco 1941 Console
#1

I have a restored 1941 Philco BOL console. I haven't used it for sometime until recently . It plays great and now its picking up FM stations clearly  in the evenings ,I have a Pilot tuner for that purpose when I want FM .. Now I am picking FM up without the tuner turned on ? My question is anybody else picking FM stations too with their AM Philcos ? Thanks

Very strange. I'm not the best troubleshooter so some others on here will surely help sort this out but a couple initial questions come to mind.

What is the specific 1941 model, so folks can look at the schematic.
If you physically disconnect the Pilot tuner from the set I would assume the FM signal is no longer heard?

Hi Bob its  Model # 41-608. The pilot tuner is connected by RCA phono jack and the Philco has to be turned to phono to receive the FM signals ..Just wondering if other are getting FM on old AM only radios ?Thanks Andy

We have at least 2 stations in my area that broadcast their programs simultaneously in both AM and FM.

Bob, I was going to say the same thing as RodB. When they identify themselves (not very often) some mention both AM and FM and some just FM.

That must be it, simulcast programing on Am and Fm. If the model had the old FM band it is possible to detune it in such a way to pick up a harmonic of the 88-108 FM band, but this set does not. I have watched videos of people in the former USSR modifying FM receivers there that were intended to pick up stations on the OIRT FM band so that they will pick up the Western FM band, but those two bands are not as far apart. The whole switch over from the old FM band to the new one was made around 1947-48, and the theory was that the old 42-50 mc band would be dedicated to amateur use. How much is in use today is questionable, the lower end used to be used by some police agencies, but that was narrow band FM, much of it is UHF and digital now.

Arran
