37-60B?
#1

I came across a tombstone today at an antique market today, I think that it was a 37-60B. Cosmetically it was in excellent condition. It was missing a couple of tubes and the sockets of said tubes were loose, but otherwise it looked pretty much unmolested. I'm considering making an offer on it, but would like to get a few opinions on this set and it's value. Thanks.

Hi

The 37-60 is not the most desirable Philco out there, but it certainly isn't the worst. With five tubes, it is a good performer.

The important thing here, is whether or not the photofinished front panel is still in good condition, or not. Here is a late version 37-60B with excellent photofinish:

If the one you are looking at has good photofinish, you should grab it if the price isn't ridiculously high. How much $$ is the seller asking for it?

$75.00. I wish that I had taken a few pictures of it. The only external damage that I saw was the dial cover was loose. Finish looked good & appeared all original. Couldn't see much of the inside because it wasn't under very good lighting.
It looks like the 37-60B on the June '36 + page.

In that case, it is a cathedral, not a tombstone. Cathedral = rounded top, tombstone = flat top.

If the photofinish is intact and the chassis isn't rusty, go for it. I've seen lots of 37-60 and 37-61 cathedrals on eBay with the photofinish completely stripped off. These, to me, are worth a lot less than a nice original that still has its photofinish intact.

I realized my faux pas after my post, it is a cathedral. Thanks for the clarification though. I went back today & took a closer look & took a few pictures. I was mistaken on which model it is, it's actually a 37-61. I think I'm going to make an offer on it & see what happens.

Good! The 37-61 is better than a 37-60 in that the 37-61 has a better SW band - 5.7 to 18.2 mc, as opposed to 2.3 to 7.4 mc on the 37-60. Plus, the 37-61 has two-speed tuning with dual concentric tuning knobs, which makes it easier to tune on the SW band.

Good luck.
