54C Cabinet Refinish
#1

I started stripping this cabinet before it got super chilly out because I knew I wasn't going to be able to work on it too much this winter.  I'm just starting this thread now since I just posted about the electronic restoration in the other forum and the symmetry of doing so soothes my borderline neurodivergent brain.

Someone had definitely been over this cabinet with another coat of something that didn't like coming off but acetone and lacquer thinner mix eventually did a pretty good job.  Lots of added glue in here too.  At some point, someone used some finish nails to keep or reinforce the joining of the face to the front and sides.  Not crazy about it and will probably try to seat them a little better rather than have to patch empty holes.

Front is in pretty good condition, all things considered.  Will need a little touch-up with stain on the right side of the photo, but ultimately I think I'll just go over the front with clear gloss.  Will do some dark on the sides and grooves up around the top for some contrast.  Same for the base, I think.

I did already remove and dispose of the asbestos sheet attached to the bottom, especially since this radio is going to someone else instead of myself.  What would people suggest, if anything, to provide a barrier for heat underneath the chassis?  Would it be beneficial to cut vent grooves through the base as was done on other models, and ensure feet underneath give it clearance for a little air circulation?

Best wishes,
Roy

Roy;
Personally I would have left the asbestos alone if it were my set, but you can find a modern substitute that some auto parts sell as exhaust gasket material. I actually need to get some as at least one set I own depends on the thickness of an asbestos sheet as a spacer, the pushbuttons rub on the top of their slots, in the dial escutcheon, without it.

hello Roy,
I’d follow Arran’s suggestion and use automotive gasket material, which I keep around for situations like this. Like Arran, I usually leave the original in place if it’s still in good shape. As for this set, I was bidding on what was listed as a model 54, but it turned out to be a model 59, so I’m still searching for a model 54.

Sincerely Richard
