advice on cabnit refinish
#1

Complete novice at cabinet restoring.I am converting this 46-1213 radio cabinet into a tv stand. The electronics fit perfectly where the old phono went, and the smaller door on the right is ideal for a gaming system. Its a present for my brother. It doesn't have to be perfect but i would like to make it as nice as i can.Where do i start.Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!!Thanks can't seem to upload pic,it keeps saying too big.I would gladly send a private email to one of you experts.

Is it an empty cabinet or something? The original radio had AM/FM/ and shortwave with 11 tubes so it was a pretty decent set.

He's selling the working chassis on another thread.

Note by site admin: The "for sale" thread referred to here no longer exists.

He's also recaping a 38-4 so my guess is that he's trying his hand at the hobby

Where to start?OK-First thing she is a he.I'm a dude-not offended i get that a lot with a name like kelly.Second-I found a good article on refinishing so I'm set on that.I am very new to the hobby and after looking at the chassis i believe it is well beyond my capabilities.I bought a bunch of aa5's to practice on and the46-1213 was part of the deal.If i didn't take it it was going to the dump.I would hang onto it but i'm out of room/My storage room has a 38-4,42-380 and a 49-1100 all of which i think i have a better chance of restoring than the 1213.Lastly-Thank you for reading my post.Pretty soon i will be posting enough stupid questions to get labeled the village idiot!!If anyone is in the hampton roads va area,i could really use some guidance!!Thanks again!MR KELLY

You should start by posting pictures.

help will come from people seeing what needs to be done. Cabinet refinition is very subjective. on both the one performing the refinish, and the object being refinished.

For having tried first on a large console, and then on a smaller radio, I must say it is a LOT easier on smaller radios Icon_smile

Isn't that the truth.

Kelly you can create an account on Photobuket.com and upload you pics there, then just link to them on the Phorum. Copy the IMG links from photobucket and paste them into the forum window using the Img button on the post a reply screen.

I was amazed how simple they can be!

I got a small battery operated 5 tuber with a neat (but small) chassis that has a total of like 14 capacitors! The cost of recapping this is about 5$ You're tempted to change the ceramics while you're at it just because its not really an issue whatsoever. lol.

Contrasts with the 1230 that has pages of components.

That's when you understand the "you are starting with quite a large project" and "wow, a 9 tube radio" that don't mean much for a newcomer...
