Another Console
#1

A lady I used to work with called me yesterday and said she had a radio she would like to give me. She said it has tubes in it and was made in the 20s. I thought , made in the 20s, Yeah, right! Theresa and I went to pick it up that evening. Well, it turned out to be an RCA Radiola 50. It doesn't work, but the cabinet is nearly perfect! The finish is original and has very few scratches or dings. Even the dial light has the original hood still attached. The radio has with it, the original owners manual and an original warranty card! My problem now is, what to do with it. We just sold our house and will be living in a small apartment for a while. I think I may have to sell it. Icon_sad

It's one of those once-in-a-lifetime great gifts. If you're going into a small apartment, what are you doing with the rest of your furniture that you can't put in the apartment? Is there someone you can keep it for you (who doesn't have small kids or animals)?

I believe that the Radiola 50 is the Radiola 17 in a console cabinet. The Radiola 51 was the Radiola 18 in a similar cabinet. There are usually very few things that ever go wrong with those sets. I notice that the power transformer has been replaced.

I agree, I would find some way to keep it, either with a friend or in dry storage someplace. The two chassis and power supply looks very similar to those in my Canadian Westinghouse model 89 which was similar electrically, though not identicle, to a Radiola 60 I think. The 89 is a 1929 model and uses a row of 27s and a #45 on the tuner chassis. My set does not work, likely bad caps, and the back is missing. At least these photos give me an idea of what the back looked like, I never thought it used a cane screen I figured it was maybe fabric or hardware cloth?

Icon_thumbup Sell it if u need the cash, but it's a great radio for collectors.

That is a very nice set and would be a shame for you to have to re-sell it so soon. I had a Radiola 41 for a while and it was basically a Radiola 16 redone for AC in a console cabinet. It could come either battery or with a power pack and different tubes for AC usage. Mine was AC and was missing only one tube... the 10!

P.S. I just realized that set has an inclined sounding board! Hmmm.. Icon_biggrin

No matter where you go, there you are.

Looks like a keeper to me, Steve.
