Well here it is..........my newest addition, a 9s262 with motorized tuning.
And boy is it UGLEEEE! BUT the plus side is it's complete with glass AND an actual working 6T5 tube. So I think I got my $50 worth.

Already tore the dial down, waxed all the pieces, straightened two of the tabs lubricated and reassembled it. We're having fun now

When you decide to retire that festive grille cloth Kenny Richmond is almost set to release a couple of patterns that will work for you. The first is the famous swirl pattern followed by the block pattern, both of those were used in the 9-S-262's:

As I mentioned in your other thread the 9-S-262 was the first Zenith console I bought many moons ago and it still resides in my collection. That 6T5 is just icing on the cake, congratulations!

It looks like I will have to do the green over in black. I have seen one that someone "restored" using black accenting where this one has green. I don't think original finish is left at all.

How much of this case is "photofinish"? Thanks again for the heads up on the grille cloth from Kenny Richmond. It will be interesting to see where his pricing is. But then again, if you can get the cloth I guess it's a moot point.

I would see if one of the usual outfits still has some of that cloth, you may get lucky. What grille cloth is under that improvised one? As for faux finishes I don't know if there is any on this cabinet, to my eyes it looks like someone already stripped off the original finish before they added that green paint to the trim parts and the lighter coloured bands look real. This was definately a better buy then that $450 set even if the cabinet on it was of a more interesting design.

Gene, I don't think anything on that cabinet is photo-finish, so you should be able to get rid of the green and tone it back the way it should be.

Unfortunately all the US grille cloth sellers are out of the two patterns that would be correct for that set. The swirl was the first one to sell out and I don't think the block lasted too much longer. There is a guy in Italy selling grille cloth and he still has some of the swirl pattern, but between his prices, the Euro exchange rate, and shipping you're probably looking at a good chunk of change for a console size piece.

I haven't talked to Kenny recently about his pricing, but I know he was excited about the quality of the cloth. He found an original piece of the swirl to use as a pattern because the reproduction stuff wasn't as exact as he originally thought.

For anyone looking for grille cloth until more reproductions come out there is a lot of cloth being sold on eBay. While you might not find an exact Philco, Zenith, etc. pattern, you might find something that at looks somewhat decent until you can locate something more exact. An eBay seller by the name of brets-old-radios seems to be selling some decent generic patterns.

Agree, don't think that any faux finish was used on this set.

Well I have an issue with the motor tuning switch rod. I got the brass sleeve out to be able to clean & relube it but the steel rod won't come out. I have removed the set screw that appears to hold it in place but no go. Any suggestions on how to get this out. I won't be able to replace the two belts until this comes out of there.

It's probably just frozen from being in there for over 70 years. I'd drip a little WD-40 or Liquid Wrench along the shaft/sleeve and in the set-screw hole and just let it sit overnight. It's sometimes amazing what a little lubrication and time will do.

There is a way to replace the belts w/o removing anything. Alan Jesperson and Mark Oppat sell O-Ring material that you cut to length and then glue using fresh super glue. Some guys love doing it that way and others don't have very good luck with it at all. I used it on a 6-S-229 when I was in a hurry and didn't have the correct size belt or O-Ring and it worked OK. I still prefer using the correct size O-Ring, but just mentioned that method as an alternative.

Hi John,
I have put WD-40 and some really good stuff I had when I worked at Coke. The shaft turns but will not come out. I am wondering if the set screw made a big enough burr on the steel to keep it from letting go.
EDiT: looks like I will have to try the cut and glue method. That shaft isn't coming out of there.

UPDATE: I have acquired the correct complete speaker that has been reconed off the bay The speaker was three times the price of the radio That hopefully only leaves the grille cloth.
