I've done it again!

I couldn't pass up this E.H. Scott Allwave 23 Tasman cabinet...

I had considered fixing this up and reselling it. Then, someone expressed an interest in acquiring it from me. I haven't heard any more from the fellow, so I think I'll keep it Icon_smile

I've already been looking around, to see what I could get rid of to make room for it so that it may stay here. (These days, it's to the point that when one console comes in, another pretty much has to go.) Don't be surprised if I put one of my Philco chairsides with separate speaker up for sale soon. The next logical step will be to find a 7-knob Allwave 23 tuner chassis, amp/power supply, speaker and dial escutcheon...oh, and the cabinet will require refinishing. At least the lower part will. The lid is still in pretty decent shape other than some scratches on top.

I kind of like it as it is. I say fix it and listen to it, and then donate it later on.

Nice find Ron..

That is a good looking cabinet. I used to have a tuner and amp that went with that cabinet and a woofer with two tweeters and the crome was perfect, but I let it get away. That was before I got interested in old radios. Icon_sad . By the way I like that little arvin in the uppper right in the picture that was what I used the listen to the Lone Ranger and others in late 40's I have one also. Good luck on the cabinet and finding a chassis for it Icon_thumbup.

Very nice find!! That will be a fun project to put right and an outstanding set to listen to!!!!

Oh, wow, Joe, I wish you still had the Allwave 23 tuner, amp and speakers...oh well! I'll find a suitable tuner and amp eventually.

The Arvin belongs to Debbie. She now collects Arvin bakelite and plastic sets.

Nice!! I know you'll find the tuner and speakers. Seems like finding the cabinet is the hard part, especially one in that good of condition.

Just over a month later and I've come up with the tuner...with a complete set of knobs!

Granted, the chrome is not in the best of shape. Rough in some areas, bubbling in others, rusty in other spots. But the tuner is complete. And the complete set of knobs is an extra added bonus.

The lacquer on the knobs is in poor shape, and they will all need to be relacquered.

This is an eBay find. I was outbid on the amp. The set was advertised as "working" before it was parted out. I'll go through it anyway...eventually...but I'll restore the McMurdo first.

Oh, and I now have an escutcheon for the dial, also, along with the "Y" cable for the tweeters, just in case I ever get lucky enough to find them.

Very nice, the chrome is in more or less the same condition as my AW 12 amp and radio chassis'. Mine may be in a little better condition. I'm watching an AW 12 on Ebay now, there are separate auctions for the amp chassis and the radio chassis, which is a two-dialer, mine being a single dial model which I'll probably list on Ebay mext week. This Ebay seller doesn't have a speaker to go with the radio and amp. I have a 12" pedestal speaker that came with the Scott I have.

Even the Scott's with bad chrome can be polished up to look fairly respectable and are still pretty impressive looking. That is a good snag to get it with all the knobs. When they parted out that Scott I'm surprised the knobs didn't get listed separately.

Ron's Christmas list:

It's good to know the chrome can be more or less reclaimed to a certain extent.

Ooh that's gotta hurt and do wear nitrile gloves. Ya know kneeding pizza dough and/or a few loaves of bread helps some with an Alieve pill, if you're allowed.
#13

Good find!!! Might be worth it to have the parts re-chromed for this rare set!

The tuner is now in the cabinet. Quick and dirty picture:

The cabinet looks better with an escutcheon, doesn't it?

Stupid Scott flash chrome, why such a high end brand went so cheap on chrome plating I'm never know. Wells Gardener seems to have been able to plate their chassis properly and their business was making department store brands. The plating on this example is even worse then normal, I don't think that any amount of polishing will make it look respectable unfortunately. The knobs on that Scott look the spitting image of the ones on my FADA model 1001 post war AC/DC set, even down to the boxwood rings on the face, maybe Scott bought them off the shelf?

Arran
