Opinions On A 660X Please
#1

I am going to look at what I believe is a Philco 660X tomorrow. From the pictures that have been provided, the case looks like someone was going to refinish it as it looks very dull. Also the top has been painted black.......why I am not sure yet.

It looks complete, but someone has attached an extension cord with the receptacle end cut off and put it on the antenna and ground clips. What bothers me is the plug end is still there. If it got plugged into the wall wouldn't that fry a whole bunch of stuff???

They have listed it at $150. From what I can determine this is not a common set to be able to find, so maybe the price is acceptable??

Your thoughts and opinions are appreciated. Thanks.

I would take an ohm meter and check across the leads, one should go to either end of the antenna coil, depending on what band the set is on. Even if the antenna coil is good I think $150 is too much for an as is console like that.

Somebody has stripped the cabinet outright and painted the top black, probably to cover up a black ring or veneer damage. In any event it looks even less like a $150 radio and more like a garage sale special in that condition. I don't know what line of stupidity was behind connecting a power cord to the antenna and ground terminals but I would definitely test for continuity before even thinking of buying it, I always assume the worst when I see things like that.

$40 tops at most if local and can fit in your vehicle. I don't want it.

Well the antenna coil tested with resistance so I assume it is OK. Finish has been stripped..........looks like someone was going to do a refinish and didn't get there. Top is the worst. Center part of veneer is lifting. Side pieces look ok except for the black paint. Grill cloth is ok, one small area, but not that noticeable. Settled on it at $75.00 Works for me. Just waiting for my brother to get here to get it into the cellar.

PS they're getting some snow up north....saw 4 accidents on the way back.
230 miles round trip.

Good! Icon_thumbup Icon_biggrin You will enjoy your 660. It's almost a 116 and just as powerful as a 116B in a console cabinet - the chassis are the same size, and very similar "under the hood" as well. The 660 has one less tube than the 116, though, and four bands instead of five.
