Getting a Philco 70 tomorrow
#1

I am supposed to pick one of these up tomorrow. After looking at the schematic to get ready for a restore, I noticed a "BC" resistor. Is this a wire wound or a candhom type? Just curious as to what I am in for on replacement parts.

Also, where are the serial numbers located so you know if it is an non AVC model or not. This one has copper E-caps from the picture I saw today. I think that makes it an early one from what I have seen in photos online.

The cabinet looks good except for some veneer missing on the grill.

Thanks,
Steve

Wirewound, high wattage.

Right-o. And the serial number is stamped in two places: one, on the back of the chassis, easily seen; and two, underneath the tuning condenser where you cannot see it unless you remove the tuning condenser.

All Model 70 sets originally had the copper Mershon electrolytics.

Congratulations on a great find! Icon_thumbup

Consider "re-stuffing" the Mershons. It's not hard.

Well I picked it up this morning. it is mostly intact. The grill and right side of the arch is loosing the veneer. It is hard to see, but the veneer on the arch is split in the middle. I am wondering the best way to approach this- just try to re-glue what is there (my first plan) or try to replace all the veneer on the right arch if I can't get it to look right.

Does anyone know what type walnut veneer it is? The lines are straight throughout it.

Are there pieces of veneer missing from the arch or is the veneer just lifting? If it's only lifting see if you can get a hold of a hypodermic needle of the type they include in inkjet printer cartridge refill kits, the syringe is about a 1/2 inch across and the needle maybe 1/32 across. I use one of these to inject yellow glue under lifting veneer and then clamp it with a stiff block covered with either wax paper or plastic, saran wrap or a plastic bag, so the veneer doesn't stick to the block. I think the veneer used on the arch may have been Australian walnut or some type of mahogany, the control panel looks like plain cut french walnut veneer.

Thanks Arran.

The veneer is just lifting on the arch. It is cracked in the middle where it lifted. It is missing on the grill. I'll look for a syringe like you mentioned and try it. I have to finish up a Model 60 first and I will get to this one in a few weeks.

Steve, in the past, I have used a soda straw to apply wood glue under a loose veneer. Just put some wood glue in the straw, flatten the end and slip it under the veneer, then roll the other end of the straw to force the glue out. Then clamp the veneer.
