Philco 60 MB scored
#1

As a general rule, I don't buy sets on ebay anymore partly because of the crazy prices and party because of shipping horror stories.

I still look though and stumbled across a Philco 60 MB a few days ago and was immediately drawn to it. The starting bid was $40 and no takers with a few minutes left to go.

Here are some photos from the auction.

Not quite as nice as the one shown in the gallery, but I saw a lot of potential, placed a bid and won Icon_smile

Now to deal with shipping. I reached out the the seller and exchanged a few messages about the perils of shipping antique radio. I explicitly mention how a loose speaker or chassis could bang around and destroy the cabinet. He assured me he was an old pro at shipping these sets...

A box arrived after a few weeks and I was immediately alarmed when I picked it up. There was a lot of slack in the sides and I could feel stuff flopping around inside.

Amazingly, it mostly broke right along all the seams. The only damage is the split molding on the top right side.

As for the chassis, the dial pointer and lamp were pushed forward and shattered the dial scale. Otherwise, it looks fine. I think only the electrolytics have been replaced.

This should be an interesting project Icon_biggrin

Oh, boy. Good thing you can fix just about anything, Bob.

View it as an "opportunity."

Looking forward to "watching" another bandersen project! 8)

"He assured me he was an old pro at shipping these sets..."

He must have never heard of rigid foam or bubble wrap or some other possibilities beside wadded-up newspaper. What shameIcon_eek

Luckily, it all came back together quite nicely as you can seen in the cabinet restoration forum Icon_biggrin
