Another Phactory Phranken-Philco?
#1

I saw this at the MARC Extravaganza auction this afternoon:

Big deal, another Philco grandfather clock, right?

Look closer:

It has a Philco 89 chassis inside - and from the looks of the front panel, it appears that it may have been made for use with this chassis!

I ended up with it - paid more than I wanted to for it, but this will give me the opportunity to examine it more closely later.

I knew Philco put 52 chassis inside these grandfather clock cabinets to use up excess stock, but I've never heard of, nor seen, an 89 in a grandfather clock cabinet...

Wow Ron where do you find these radios in your travels? Did you at least save her and bring it home?

Yes, like I said, I ended up with it. Icon_biggrin

The radio next to it looks interesting as well, the one built into a table or book rack. I've seen Sparton models that looked similar and had the remnants of the box section that held the chassis.
A Philco 89 in a grandfather clock cabinet? Even if it's a odd combination it looks like it belongs in there.

Very nice find Ron. If you get tired of it let me know. That combines my interest in Philco radios and clocks. Does the clock work?

Paul, Steve, Jerry and Arran - Thanks! Icon_biggrin

Jerry - I don't know about the clock yet, I'll have to take it home and see.

Nice snag Ron! Is the clock face really faded or did you camera just wash it out? That Philco is my favorite of almost all the Grandfather Clock Radios and the version with a model 70 chassis sits in our living room.

The clock face is faded badly. It looks like it sat facing the sun for decades, although the cabinet itself looks pretty good - only missing the finial.

Someone had a reproduction clock face at the Extravaganza flea market today, Debbie found it and picked it up for me. Icon_biggrin Icon_thumbup

So now we have two Philco GFCs - this 89 and a 52. Someone had a Philco 71 grandfather clock in the flea market - the same seller that had the repro clock face. So now I can say I've seen every known version. Icon_smile

I wonder if there are people restoring clock faces.

Sure - http://www.xrestore.com/pages/dials.htm and http://www.dialhouse.net/touchtc.html are some examples.

I guess it makes sense that they would use a model 71 chassis in one of these cabinets since the typically came with a model 70 in earlier versions. Since we now now that they used model 52 chassis, model 71 chassis, and model 89 chassis either they had a lot of leftover cabinets to use up or they decided to continue production into at least another model year. When did the 89 come out? 1932 like the model 71?
