Philco 620 need speaker (or repair) and knob
#1

I need the center bottom knob for my Philco 620. Does anyone have one?

The speaker in it has a good field coil and audio transformer, but the cone was completely gone, and I ripped out what was left of the voice coil. Unfortunately there is rust in a portion of the gap around the pole piece. Do you think it can be reconned, or should I just try to find a replacement speaker. The mounting bolts show in the front, and the speaker is round, but with square corners, so I can't use just any round speaker to replace it.

Call Hank Brazeal - hankspkr@charter.net - 205-403-6243

If he can fix it he is the best.

Kind regards,
Terry

You're in luck - here is a Model 620 speaker on our favorite online auction site.

PHILCO ANTIQUE 620 RADIO SPEAKER- PN 32-7019N

If you do not win this auction nor get Hank to fix yours, lotsa luck, pal. I tried advertising here and that "other" forum for a K-17 speaker for a Model 18...no luck. I know there are lots of K series Philco speakers, as well as S series for your radio, sitting around gathering dust in collections...I guess no-one wants to part with any. Icon_confused

Ron, the tar all over the cone on that other one makes me think it would haev to be re-coned, although that may be better than having one which can not be re-coned. Thanks for the tip.

Despite all of the radio sites on the Internet, we do not have a good way for people to post what they want/need. Separate threads such as this one tend to get lost after a while, so it really needs to be some sort of alphabetical list which can be sorted by part type, brand, model, size, Etc., and which is updated when the need is satisfied.

Hank Brazeal could not recone my old speaker, and I did not buy the old with the tar all over it.

It has been some time since my first post. Does anyone have an S14 speaker in good condition?

Does anyone have a 620 speaker? I bought a Philco speaker the correct size, shape, and field coil rating on E-bay, but the darn thing has a much smaller field coil, so it probably can not handle the amperage of this radio. (edited 0 it does have a hum-bucking coil, but the seller had disconnected it).

How do I determine what the speaker I bought was used with, so i can try to sell it to someone working on such a set? Is there a speaker and radio model cross reference?

I still need a speaker. We have the cabinet stripped and I am working, with help from a friend, to repair the two missing veneer chips on the front.

You may try contacting Freeman-Tuell Spkr Co in Dallas. They dont have a website, but google-search their name will find their phone number online if you wish. They can still service vintage field-coil type spkrs, "if" they have a paper-cone that retrofits. They do Great Work!! F-T Spkr has been in business in Dallas since the 1930s,.. Reasonable prices too.

Another alternative, is to use a 8" full-range pm type spkr such as the musak type ( search rauland type 8" spkrs on ebay), will usually turnup a good sub to use with a appropriate size wirewound resistor to sub for the old field-coil.
To mount the spkr without changing the orig cabinets front appearance, cut a new spkr "baffleboard" to fit inside the cabinet, and use the orig decorative mounting studs to hold it in place. The pm type sub spkr can be mounted to the baffle-board without disturbing the orig cab, and can be removed to put the radio back to orig in the future if you can find a orig spkr. Make a "template" from thin cardboard so concessions can be made for proper-spacing a retrofitted spkr. In Philcos, a retrofitted spkr baffle has to clear the tuning assembly when orig chassis is installed, and spkr will be mounted abit higher in the cabinet. A bit of crafty-engineering with a sabre-saw,small drill & bits,to build a new small spkr baffle-board, will get you listening to your radio sooner than later! Just takes abit of good measuring, and a replacement spkr can be retrofitted indeed without any damage to your orig cabinet at all! Enjoy your vintage Philco! Icon_wink
