Philco 84B Restoration Chronicles DONE
#1

I got this in the mail this week and it is in great condition except for some splitting and veneer loss. This will not be a major task as others have been but I figured i would share as it comes along..

Here she is at the start:

I have replaced all the bad veneer that was on the cabinet and am now in the stripping process.

I know it is not cabinet related but I took the chassis out for a cleaning today.

I've been looking forward to watching the progression on this one. Looking good so far, wish I had one like that, lol

I would sell it to you but the guy I bought it from really worked me over on the price.

Today is another day of ridiculous snow so I have had time to work.

Finished the stripping today and have begun grain filling the grill and dome.

Got her out today for the first toning.
I used perfect brown for the lighter shade and will use medium walnut or DK walnut for the darker color once it cures fully.

Is this a good color pairing? she seems a little dark on the face?

What were the original colors if anyone knows.

thanks
Kirk

Well I hated it so I stripped the center and gave it a nice golden oak coat.
Back is dark walnut and then tomorrow is trim in ex dk walnut. Then all I have to do is clear and put her back together.

Wow.

You make it all look effortless.

BTW you skipped showing the step where you made that internal trim golden - in the previous phot it is the same color as the rest of the front panel. How did you do it?

Very easy Mike,

I had toned the whole front with perfect brown and was going to use some dark walnut on the outer design but it was all way too dark. I was going to strip the cabinet and tape it off and re-tone it but I figured i'd try just stripping the center. I used tiny bit of lacquer thinner with tiny pieces of steel wool and bit by bit stripped the center. I figured if I made a spill or mistake then I could strip everything but It came out undamaged. It is amazing how much nicer the finish comes out when it is not 45 degrees out.

Today I will tape the back off and tone the last of the trim.

thanks Geoff,

I finished her yesterday,

toned the grill cloth and put her back together. Sorry for the crappy pics.
still not happy with the finish but it aint half as bad as the electrical. gonna have to pay someone to align and do all the work I cant. it is a bit disheartening, Icon_thumbdown
