15 (X) tubes
#1

The June of 1932 15 uses 44s and 37s. I don't think I have ever seen a 37 as a globe tube, maybe the 44 and certainly the 42s in the PP output.

Do you think there was much likelihood of this radio have some/any globe tubes?

Almost all of the tubes in it are STs with printed logos. So they are nice, but wrong for a restored unit.

Man, this thing has some big iron.

When introduced in June 1932, the radio definitely would have had a full complement of the globe style tubes. 1933 was the time of changeover to the ST style, and tube production gradually switched over fully to ST as the year progressed.

I have a few globe 44's with 1933 date codes, so they were still being made that way into the early months of 1933. I have seen globe 37's but they are quite scarce. Its possible that in late production of the 15X there might have been a mix of globe and ST style tubes installed.

I have a few globe 37 tubes. As Mondial said, they seem to be quite scarce.

Russ, there's a 37 globe tube on ebay

The 15X I got from Willie had a couple of globe 37's and 44's, I replaced the rest of the ST's with globes. Looks Great and plays great, one of my new favorite radios.

I think that I will look around a little before I spend $45 each on the 37s.

From an estate with about 10 other radios:

The top has been refinished already, so I will probably restore the whole cabinet. Anybody need a piece of carpet?

The set originally had all globe tubes. The 37s are out there. The 42 globes will be the most expensive.

I am in the middle of restoring a model 15X chassis/cabinet. It is definitely NOT the easiest cabinet that I have ever done......

I think that $45 each is excessive for a balloon type #37, since it is not a power output tube and not really a high demand tube. If it's one of the ones under the tube shield why even worry about it?

They are out there for much less than 45.00.

In fact, I don't believe that I have ever paid more than 10.00 for an NOS one.

45.00 is more like you would pay for a globe 42.

The ones I got cost $10 each, nice finishing touch to a nice radio.

Well, if you find any more Philco brand ones for $10, let me know.

I will but they are few and far between.

It took a long time (~4 years!), but I finally found a few to complete my 15DX. I paid around $45 BIN + shipping for the three untested. I got lucky and thy all test like new Icon_smile

Philco branded globe 80s and 42s are pretty scarce too. I suggest you set up a search with email alerts for "Philco globe" on ebay and be patient. Also ask around on the forums and radio clubs.
