Second 70 Cabinet Finished
#16

I think I would buy some cheap veneer and a piece 1/8 inch plywood and make a mock-up cabinet and do a couple of practice runs.

Steve,
Did you use biscuits when you joined the wood?

Kirk, no biscuits. I just joint the edges and glue the together. The banding gives the core its strength. Or were you refering to using biscuits to join the veneer?Icon_lol

Well, I have about 25 hours in this project and it is starting to look like a Philco 70!

Where do you get the orphan chassis and hardwear like escutcheons for the complete sets you are making? Have you thought of buying these up to use in your cabinets?
#23

Nice step by step Steve, thanks, an inspiration.

Todd, when I buy radios, I usually buy the worst of the worst! Also when I see escutcheons, knobs, speakers and such at a reasonable price, I buy them and put them in my "someday kit".

Being a hoarder, if i could do what you do i would probably buy any chassis i could and have an entire fleet of 70's. Not to downgrade Mr. Olivers cabinets but I think your cabinets look even better because it seems that you have payed more attention to grain detail on the veneers. You could sometimes tell that the Oliver cabinets were reproduction by the front arch veneer which didnt flow from one splice to the other or instead of strait grain it would be figgured.
Again, great job.

I'm going to go ahead and add the dark accent to the flutes. It is much easier to do it now rather than wait until the cabinet is finished.

I masked off the edges, sprayed two coats of clear to seal the wood, then sprayed the dark toner.

[Image: https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4380/3697...0bf9_z.jpg]105_0884 by Steve Davis, on Flickr
The toner has been sanded off the face of the columns.

This is the piece that goes across the bottom. I have cut a cope on the ends to match the edge profile of the columns.

Then I'd love to know how to use them Icon_lol

I think Steve first has a need for a tool, and then he either buys one or makes one, and by then he knows how to use it.

It is like any project, if you have a clear idea of what to do, then you have some ideas as to what tools could get it done.

Forming the wrap-around

[Image: https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4474/3724...42c4_z.jpg]105_0921 by Steve Davis, on Flickr
I used 1/8 inch Luan to make the wrap-around. In order to bend the wrap, I first soak it for a full day.

[Image: https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4478/3724...7b97_z.jpg]105_0927 by Steve Davis, on Flickr
After soaking, I bent the wrap and placed it between the legs of a small work table to hold it in a "U" shape.

[Image: https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4390/3741...586e_z.jpg]105_0928 by Steve Davis, on Flickr
The wrap was left to dry for two days to form.
