low volume on Philco model 20
#1

I just got this radio and all tubes are good. I turn it on and the volume is all the way up - you can hear it, but its low. When I place my hand on the volume control, the volume goes up - or if I touch the chassis at certain points. What should I look for? Thanks, Phil

Have you replaced the capacitors on this set? Even if it is not humming, I'll bet an open capacitor is just begging to be coupled to the B- or ground. Of course it could be that the volume control needs a good shot of De-Oxit oe othr cleaner to clear it out. Start from here, and let us know what you find.

You should also check the continuity of the RF coils. If one is open...especially the first RF coil...this could cause the symptoms you describe.

Thanks to all - I'll check the RF coils first. Phil

All RF coils are good - next?
#6

Next, check capacitors as Codefox suggested. Have they all been replaced?

Check continuity of the two sections of the volume control.

Check wiring between tuning condenser and the various RF coils. They are known to come loose over time, at the tuning condenser.

And finally, check your 24A tubes - are they good?
