What knobs were used on the Philco 16B tombstone?
#1

I have a Philco 16B tombstone, now electrically restored, cabinet OK as is. It came with three small black bakelite hex shaped knobs, but with no tuning knob. I have a LARGE black hex knob I can use, which matches some pictures of the radio I have seen. BUT, clearly the tuning knobs needs to be a set screw type rather than push-on like I have, since it takes some force to "shift gears" on the 2-speed drive. There is evidence of a set screw being used on the tuning shaft.

Does anyone have a photo of the correct knobs for this radio? I have yet to find a photo online with enough detail. The small black hex knobs may not even be original.

Thanks!

Hi Dave

From your description, it sounds like you have the 5-band version of the 16B tombstone. Yes, it originally used hex knobs. I've seen some with small hex knobs on the volume and tone controls and large hex knobs on the band switch and the tuning shaft. I have also seen them with three small hex knobs across the bottom (volume, band switch, tone). I have one in here now for restoration; it has three small hex knobs across the bottom.

For your tuning knob, you need a reproduction hex knob that has a set screw, not a metal insert for push-on use. Antique Electronic Supply used to sell these; I'm not sure if they still do, as they seem to be geared more toward guitar amp enthusiasts and audiophools these days.

Dave,
Here's a pic of the knobs of my 4 band version of the 16 tombstone.

Hope this is some help.

I do have the 5-band version of the 16B tombstone. David Frush located a large black bakelite Philco knob with a set screw. Photo attached. Looks like this is a likely candidate for an original knob, since its shape would permit pulling it out to engage the slow speed dial drive, and the outer shape would match the larger bandswitch knob below it.

Thank all of your for your help!
Dave
