Tube shield finish
#1

In the past I have refinished the square type tube shields from the mid-late 30's Philcos with chrome paint.  I now have a 16B and a 60B that I just picked up at Kutztown and these also have round type shields. I have seen some restorations where they were refinished in aluminum or chrome and others that are an olive metallic color.  Does anyone know which is correct? What was the original factory finish?

Thanks,

Steve D

It looks like it was a nickel plate. Definitely not paint.

The Philco tube shields were originally tin plated.

Yes, tin oxidizes to an olive color. The plating is very thin and will be gone with any abrasive cleaner. If you paint 'em, make sure bottom where the shield makes contact with the chassis clip or whatever is NOT painted so contact will be preserved.
