Philco 53 960 Tropic
#1

I emailed the seller today.  Looks like it is in nice condition.  Is this a good set?

Not branded as a "Tropic" but as Ron describes its pretty similar

Big radio and from what I have gathered a darned nice radio. Your example seems to be in good cosmetic shape..no obvious wear behind knobs etc
#3

Better grab it!

^^LOL. Yeah. I see these sell on Ebay from 100 and up depending on condition.
Especially good deal if you can pick it up yourself and not pay 500 to ship the beast (Im kidding)

Funny....I use Searchtempest to search craigslist, it does not show it, while CL doex.
I guess I need to get back to basics and search directly.

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.

It was on search tempest, under antiques, radio.

...while you guys are gabbing, someone else is out there grabbing...the radio, that is... Icon_wink

$25 is a steal for that set. It is an excellent performer once properly restored.

Hi Ron,

I am supposed to get it Saturday morning.  He was tied up tomorrow.

I was just kidding, SteveJB. Congratulations! I can pretty much guarantee that you will not be disappointed.

I know you were kidding. I am looking forward to hearing it.

By the way, he says its dead and thinks its the transformer. I am hoping it's just a shorted e-cap that put out the rectifier or something easy like that.  Is there a fuse in that set?

Steve

I do not believe it has a fuse. Edit: I looked at the schematic...nope, no fuse.

If it comes down to a power transformer, I have a 53-960 parts chassis. I need the front end components for my 42-761EZ, but let me know if you need the power transformer - I believe it is OK...

Thank you.

Well I got a call last night to pick it up this morning. Then a while after, a text came that apologized and he says he got it working and changed his mind. No tropic for me.

I asked if he changes his mind again to contact me.  Once in a while it doesn't work out.

That's terrible! I wouldn't be surprised if someone offered him $100 or so, and he took it and gave you the brush-off.

I know, being cynical again, but this sort of thing happens with increasing frequency.

Maybe. He did seem very sincere though.   We'll see, hopefully he changes his mind.
