53-960 questions
#1

I have a Philco 53 960 that does not work (of course). I found Ron Ramirez's posts on his 53  960 and following his instructions and photos I replaced the bumblebee caps and the 51 a, b, and c electrolytic capacitors.  When I power up, the 330 ohm 3 watt voltage divider resister gets so hot it begins to smoke. What is wrong?

If you mean R-13 Check the polarity of your filter caps if you have one in backwards that will do it.

Well, I checked the filter caps- polarity is correct so I powered up again and this time no smoke! I unplugged and finished replacing the paper caps and fired it up again. There are 3 AM stations within 3 miles of me and I couldn't pick them up...but at about 1100 I picked up ESPN radio from where I have no idea. Not from around here. It was very quiet and static filled and they never gave call letters or city. And on the second SW band I heard a preacher- again, faintly. What the heck is wrong now?

Recheck your paper caps wiring to make sure they are where they are they are suppose to be. If miss wired  you maybe bypassing the signal to ground. Clean the band switch. Make sure that it is good and dry before applying power, don't want to set it ablaze.
