No, it was just a piece of veneer that I glued and clamped down, then sanded with a sander.

OK, I understand.  There might be a more distinct line if I sand a little further, but this is where I stopped.  I figured that after grain filling, there will be a little more sanding and I wanted to leave room for that sanding.

I have the cabinet all stripped now. I used some stripper and a scrapper. Then some lacquer thinner and some coarse steel wool, followed by lacquer thinner and #000 steel wool, followed by lacquer thinner and a clean rag wipe down twice.

I have some very small repairs to do then some light sanding then on to the grain filler.

Today I did some wood filling along the bottom trim piece. I filled the nail holes, some depressions, and spaces between the front and side pieces. I did a quick sanding on it and applied some more wood filler. I'll let it set overnight, then sand some more tomorrow.

I'm using Famowood wood filler, walnut color. Fred Taylor told me he uses the stuff. That's good enough for me!

I was talking to Fred last night and we were discussing his finishing techniques and something interesting came up. Fred had just finished restoring a cabinet that was just like mine and the color of the bottom trim pieces came up. I thought they were black but Fred thinks they might be very dark brown. He did say there probably won't be much difference between the very dark brown and black.

Does anybody know what the factory color was for the bottom trim?

I'm including a picture of the cabinet before I started restoration.

Never really black I think. Very Dark Walnut is usually what they used on these Philco models if it is what the radio calls for. Honestly, The 60B late version does not seem to be that color. It may be just dark walnut. The Philco website shows that the trim is lighter.

Extra Dark Walnut is going to be too dark.

A few coats of Perfect Brown should do it. (Assuming you use Medium Walnut on the rest of the cabinet...which you should.)

And don't forget, DCL-PH8 for the PHILCO decal. Don't use any of the others, they will look incorrect!

Well I did the grain filling this morning. First time using this stuff. It's drying now and I'll then add the black to the speaker grill area, then sand.

I used medium walnut from Mohawk.

If you want a little more contrast, you might carefully mask off the top and the sides, leaving only the outer edges of the front surround showing, and spray those areas with Perfect Brown at the same time you spray the bottom trim.

I added the black to the grille area and used some Very Dark Walnut toner to shoot the insides. I think I over did the insides because it is very dark, almost black. Then I stained the cabinet tonight and used Medium Dark Walnut. Here are the pictures. Yeah Ron I used Medium Dark Walnut instead of Medium Walnut......
