Philco 51-1730 Electrical Questions
#1

Just looking for a little insight and direction with a Philco 51-1730 radio I was working on restoring. To start off I am fairly new to the process, I have been looking around the forums and online for information and have picked up some good information so hopefully you will be gentle with me.

The radio is missing the turntable, and had the wires cut that led to the turntable. I have found schematics for the unit and have been trying to figure out what the wires are for. The metal mesh cable I understand is the phono audio input, the colored wires seem to be power, i'm unsure what the black jacket wires are to. What I was trying to do, and not sure if its possible, was use the phono input for something like a computer or digital music input. I was able to connect an Ipod splicing an RCA cable and it works fine. When I try to connect anything else that plugs in like a PC or anything like that the phono cable shorts. Seems to be a grounding issue as far as I can tell so far.

So my question is around the black jacket wire there is a ground that needs to me connected, or if there was another wire that might have been cut that would need to be grounded. Also in my readings I was noticing things around positive grounding on some older units so didn't know if that was the case either. I did see on the schematics for the record player there was a ground, but not having that available i was looking for maybe a little advice or direction on what I might look for. Thanks for any help in advance.
