Wiring record player back in?
#1

I bought my first antique (pre-50s) console today, a Philco 41-608 for the tidy sum of $50 with a 8/10 condition on the cabinet condition. I had plans of restoring the chassis with modern capacitors.. but someone beat me to it! No wonder it already works!

All it really needs for the radio is a new power cord, or at least the plug end. Are these old cords more or less safe if they aren't frayed or patched? Only the end has been repaired with a typical 40-50 year old "do it yourself" plug end.

Anyhow... the record player is in very sad shape. The "beam of light" plastic cover is cracked up pretty bad and the wires from the tone arm aren't connected to anything.

The record cutter stuff seems to be intact, but missing the knob and was dangling down in the cabinet. Not that I care about that much. Icon_rolleyes

The power switch for the turntable are running through a cylinder hanging down low in the case and leading to this: (The two leads from the switch are circled in green)

I need help on this, big time. I don't see where the record player could tie in to power or sound. Since it's been messed with and restored in the chassis, it could be they just didn't bother soldering in the wires for the record player. Maybe they planned to do it later but then never got around to it. Who knows.

lucky dog you Icon_thumbup
here is what you need

you can get a great schematic set off chuck here on phorum
I think 7.00 yep really cheap you get every thing chassis and bol info and big schematic so you can read it

I found a wiring diagram link on a VERY old post from 2005 on another forum.. low and behold, it worked: http://www.nostalgiaair.org/PagesByModel...013433.pdf

However, it doesn't have a key to explain what the numbered items are or what certain unusual symbols are.

It would be helpful if I could find some photos of the guts of a 41-608 so I could see how things are though also in regards to the record player. This is what I have to work with, 4 bare end wires and no clue where they go to.

Two go to the chassis to power the voltage for the tone arm bulb, and 2 go to the screw tabs next to the phono imput where the pre-amp plugs in. Hopefully that helps. If you do not know which "2". just keep switching them until you find the 2 that light up the bulb(assuming your bulb is good), and then you will have the other 2 for the amp. If the bulb is shot, pm me as I may have an original and I definitely have another bulb that works just as good.

Thats the trouble with those free schematics, they are hard to read and might leave things out. Chucks Schematics are very good and larege, plus he will give you alot of information on the rest of the radio, record player you can use and he only charges for the copy and mailing.

I have drawn out an easy to understand diagram of what I have before me in regards to the motor and switch for the record player.

I think I understand now where the two tone arm audio leads go... to the backside of the RCA plug shown in my diagram, since there is nothing there on the back side of it right now.

I don't know where the power leads from the BOL bulb would go to, unless it ties in to the (seemingly very dangerous) motor circuit attached to an uninsulated screw connection. Follow things starting from the "phono motor" and switch and you'll see what I mean.

EDIT: let me clearify the cord marked "Antenna cable?". It looks similar to a Motorola antenna wire like this on the end where it plugs into the chassis:

Ben your drawling dose not look correct also plug where you have ? Mark is for philco mike silver cyl two half's plug I believe
I will take pics of mine tomorrow as I am at work

What you are calling an "antenna cable" isn't an antenna cable at all. This is the audio cable. The "black metal box" is a matching transformer.

The two wires from the chassis to the screw terminals should be the 6.3V feed to light up the lamp inside the pickup. There should be a separate cable to power the phono motor, which definitely would not connect to those two screw terminals as that would be a major safety hazard, even in 1941.

I am at a loss as to what the "silver cylinder" might be. Can you post a photo? Also, if you can, post a photo of the underside of the phonograph.

Okay nevermind about the "silver cylinder", it was just an in-line 2 prong male and female connector hooked together. Icon_lol I never looked at it close until now. I noticed it seemed to be some kind of plastic rather than metal. Light pulling in half once I noticed a gap in the middle revealed it to be nothing more than a connector.

Oh, and here are some pictures of the underside of the record player. I had to take two to get it all due to the speaker getting in the way.

The one black and one brown'ish wire from the motor and switch lead to the "silver cylinder" plug thing I mentioned before:

The other wires are for the record cutter are all intact, oddly enough. I found a proper threaded, thin nut in my nut and bolt collection to install it's switch and bulb holder back into the record player. It was dangling down in the cabinet prior to that.

here is how it is wired

Here is a modification of your diagram showing how mine is/was.

The red X's point out a length of wire(s) they aren't there on mine.
The red circle is explained on the diagram.
The purple lines show how it was wired up when I got it, with the exception of the tone arm which is completely undone.

And here is a picture to go with it. (It's a "4" in pencil, not ink)

Where do your phono power switch and motor tie in? It's just a 120v motor, correct? If so, here is my proposed method:

ben
sorry to say but looks like some one modified it
I think I have an extra chassis I will have to look
#15

I have no doubt they did some minor modifications. The only thing I see potentially missing from that area is a pair of 0.01 uF caps between the transformer and AC in (unless they are up in the transformer?) based on this portion of the schematic.

From what I see, I should be able to simply tie in the motor in the fashion I described.. correct?
