Philco 37-89 Speaker.
#1

Greetings all,

I've a Philco 37-89 with a speaker so bad off, it will need replacement. It looks as though 80 percent of the paper cone is gone to that takes care of any possible repairs.

Two questions. First, are there any other models with compatible speakers that will work out for this old set? Second, does anyone have one they're willing to part with?

With regards to the second question, I will post in the wanted section once I find out which speaker or speaker models will work out.

It can be re-coned.

Most can. Which would be more economical? The set itself is not the most valuable and from what I can see looks wise this seems to be a common speaker <?>.

Anyone do reconing?

Hi Gary

The speaker used in the 37-89 is S-16. After some searching...I found that Model 38-89 also uses this speaker, but apparently no other Philco model used the S-16.

But there is good news. Philco did not give the DC resistance of the field coil in the 37-89 schematic...but they DID in the 38-89 schematic.

It is 1140 ohms.

This means that an S-7 speaker will work as a substitute. The S-7 was used in a number of Philco sets, including the following models: 60, 37-60, 37-61, 37-610, 37-620, 38-620.

I would offer to recone it for you, but so far, I have only been able to successfully recone K series Philco speakers. S series speakers have smaller voice coils and the one time I tried to recone one, it did not work out correctly. I *think* I know what I did wrong, but I have not had time nor inclination to try again.

Ron,

I knew you'd come through with the information, and I thank you. I may have a ghost in my pile of sets that I may be able to sacrifice a speaker from. For now I have something to go on in the event I try to search for a replacement speaker for the set.

Thank you,
