37-640 RF Deck
#1

I finished the chassis on my 37-640, pulled the RF Deck, reinstalled it with new soft grommets, but it still seams quite rigidly held in the chassis. I am curious what electronic advantage was obtained by building the radio this way, reduction of microphonics ?.

Hank, I just think it was built this way to make life miserable for people trying to restore radios that had the RF deck. Curse the designer!

David Grimes...curse David Grimes...he is responsible for Philco's RF units in most 1937 and many 1938 models...

but anyway...

The RF units were cushioned with gum rubber, yes, in an effort to reduce microphonics.

Ed (blacksmith) at Renovated Radios makes and sells the proper gum rubber cushions for Philco's RF units, and those will give your Philco the original cushioning it once had.

That said, yes, I too have often used grommets in place of the original rubber cushions. Black rubber grommets do not have as much "give" as gum rubber but they work well.
