identifying a philco radio/ record player
#1

Hello,

I really hope these types of questions aren't looked down upon here. I was hoping to show some pictures and see if anyone had any idea what model radio this is. The only model number on it is "K-1721" Which brings me up nothing in an internet search.

This was taken from my grandmas who was going to just give it to goodwill, and I am curious of the model and possibly if it has any value.

Thanks in advance for any information and again if this is the wrong place for this I am sorry!

I'm just taking a guess that it might be from the late 1950s to the mid 1960s. It's not especially valuable but it does look like it's in nice condition, and the cabinet style is more interesting then most, sort of a Danish Modern style. I'm guessing that it has sliding doors on the front, most cabinet stereos had lift up lids on the top to cover up the radio and phonograph. If you like it I would take it if you have room, they are easy and inexpensive to fix up if you can work on it yourself.
Best Regards

That model is a 1962 set, the Model number "K" identifys it. Starting in 1954, Philco dropped the model year designation they adopted in 1937, like 37-, 38-, etc. thru 1953. Then Philco then started using the alphabet, starting with the letter B in 1954. C=1955, etc... The letter "I" was not used. This continued up until around 1966 ("P") when Ford merged with Philco about that time. Info from Ron Ramirez' website:

I would certainly think that it is a tube set and not solid state? How does it sound?

I recently purchased the same thing (although the leggs are different), and I too would appreciate any information on it that anyone may have. I'll try and post some pics and the model info asap.

I cannot offer any technical info but I just wanted to respond to fortunateson. These photos tug at my heart. I remember when my parents purchased this very model and had it delivered home; it was 1961 or 1962. My mother has exceptional taste and this was the most modern and elegant stereo console available at the time. Its sound was rich and the bass could be enhanced. I played my Beatles albums endlessly on this as well as my mother's opera and classical music. The radio was excellent as well. We kept it and used it up to 1983. I'm so sorry they finally sold it as well as other "period" pieces when they retired. I wish we still had it. It holds so many wonderful memories. Your grandmother also must have great taste. Do take care of it ; I hope you cherish it as well.
