Excellent Text on Magnetic Tuning
#1

If anyone is interested in understanding the details of how Philco's magnetic tuning AFC system operates, here is a great book by John Rider.

https://worldradiohistory.com/BOOKSHELF-...-Rider.pdf

The book explains a lot of the basic technical theory behind AFC and its components but not only that, it goes into detail about each manufacturers specific circuits.

In the case of Philco, he explains the actual magnetic tuning circuit of the 37-116 and the simpler 37-9, 10 and 11. This is very helpful since he includes simplified schematics of the AFC system without all the bandswitching complications which are a nightmare to decipher.

For anyone not familiar with John Rider, he did a lot more than publish books of schematics. His books on radio theory and repair were the standards of the industry for many years. Anyone wanting to understand how vintage radio circuits operate should really check them out. Luckily, they are all available for free on the worldradiohistory.com website.
