Take a look! Model 144B Cathedral
#1

I've had this radio for a few years, but recently I had the cabinet refinished by a local refinisher, Barry Jones of Evansville, Indiana.

Take a look...

Oh, and that grillecloth is the original 75 year old (1935) cloth that was in this set when I acquired it - that pattern is not being reproduced.

Whaddya think? Icon_biggrin

I love how the large toned areas set off the three burled columns. Arms raised to heaven in the cathedral - very nice.

Magnificent!

That looks very nice Ron. I don't do much refinishing as it take me a long time, but they usually turn out nice. I think I would be making about 25 cents an hour!

Hello Ron:

I liked your Model 144b so much that I purchased one last weekend off of Craigslist. I have a question regarding the "acorn" knobs. The replacement parts list includes three knobs - a Knob (Large), a Knob (Small), and a Knob (Station Selector). I've seen large and small acorn knobs. Do you know the difference between these and the station selector knob?

Thanks!

Fantastic radio! But you are pretty good at them yourself, Ron! This summer will be your breakthrough for cabinet work!

I have always heard of them refered to as Philco Hex knobs or dome knobs not acorn knobs. When someone mentions acorn knobs I usually think of the bullet shaped knobs that came about in the late 1930s on Philco and other brand sets that are flat on the back and pointed toward the front. The station selector knob is probably the largest of the three styles, over 1'' in diameter, and there would only be one of that size used on any given set, there would likely be two of the other sized knobs to be used, probably two of the larger kind and the smaller one between the two larger ones.

That radio really did turn out nice. I need to start doing that someday with some of my radios. My Philcos usually show all the stress from thier years of service! Icon_lol

No matter where you go, there you are.
