Dilemma: 46 Philco or 50 Philco console?
#1

I know this might be a hard question, since many of you collect older radios than this, but how would you compare a mid-40s Philco console like the 46-1209 or 1230 vs. a 1950 Philco console 50-1726? The 1726 is a fancy console that cost over $300 when new. It has 11 tubes vs. 8 for the 1946. They both have a 12" inch speaker. The 50 has FM and a multi-speed turntable for playing 78s, 45s, and LPs. I read that the 46 has 10 watts of audio output and the 50 has just 7 watts. Since the 50 is a very deluxe console why would it have less watts than the 46? I bought a 46 Philco last week (46-1209), but it is missing the original phono. The reason I'm considering the 50 is there are two of them for sale (one blond and one dark mahogany) within driving distance and they are in good condition. Which one would be better at playing 78s? Any comments are appreciated. Marc.

I think it depends on what you want. Which one looks better to you. Do you want FM and the ability to play 45s. As far as 7 vs 10 watts I don't think a human can hear the difference in loudness. Plus the 50 may have more efficient speakers and be louder.
