Preventive Maintenace on Tube radios?
#1

I have a nicely restored radio that was done by a well-qualified person, and this radio is quite special to me.  It will live in climate-controlled environment, kept unplugged and probably rarely used.  Should the radio be used periodically for any reason, are there things that should be done as far as cleaning the mechanical parts to prohibit corrosion, periodic inspection of the chassis for signs of deterioration, etc.  Thanks for any advice.

Hi Stoney

Definitely play the radio once in a while. The Electrolytic caps must see DC to be kept in good shape. Certainly, dust the set and the tubes. If this is an AC-DC "AA5 or AA6" radio and you have a Variac, use that to power the radio, bringing the current up slowly, to prevent the "surge" that often occurs in the tube filaments. This can happen in a transformer powered set, but this is not common. Judiciously (and I DO mean judiciously) use compressed air to dust the chassis and capacitor. Pay close attention to not aim the compressed air at the speaker. Alternately, keep the radio in a closed display case.

Care for the case in a normal manner. Dust and clean with the appropriate cleaner and polish for the case type, wood vs Bakelite vs Plaskon vs Catalin.

Any use of oil for shafts should be the absolute minimum. the bearings of a tuning capacitor are generally lubricated with a light grease and should not require maintenance except once every several years.

Hope this helps, other experts please jump in, especially if you think that this is not good advice.

I would add (guilty of not taking my own advice), if the radio uses dial belt, work the dial a few times a year. Or it will take the shape of the gear it is stretched upon, and will no longer work properly.

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.

If the set was restored properly, and by properly I mean new caps, drifted resistors, and rotted wiring replaced, then there is no reason why the set could not be played one, or even several hours per week, if you so desire. If someone did a quick and dirty job of J hooking some new new parts in, just enough to get it working, then I would hesitate to do this, new components should be connected to the terminals with new solder. Old radios don't get dusty or corroded any worse then anything else, in a controlled environment there shouldn't be many problems.
The issue I have is that most of my radios are not really played enough, even after I restore them, if I only had a handful of sets this would be simple, but what I need is some sort of rotation program.

A small bristle paint brush can be a good duster for the tubes and chassis. Gentle is the word. I try to bring radios up from my basement and play them for a while and then cycle in a different one. It can be a challenge. I am lucky as there are some decent music stations and local news stations here. Just have to be motivated to swap the radios around. Even some of my simple sets sound great especially with a tunable AM antenna to give em' a boost. Presently I am listening to an RCA 15X. I am amazed how a 6 tube set sounds so nice. Paul
