Philco 60 no sound
#1

I restored this radio about 10 years ago, replaced all caps, electrolytic or otherwise, and it has been working great daily until last week when I turned it on and heard a sight ‘zip’ and then no sound.
There’s 210vdc on the rectifier 80 but no other high voltage anywhere throughout the circuit. Tubes are lighting up and tried swapping tubes for each of the five.
I thought that maybe the output transformer or the field coil winding had opened up, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. Swapped in another single ended OT still nothing. As far as I know about the field coil winding, there is some magnetism on the case and the coil itself measures 1200Ω. Checked all resistors and there are looking good.
I work a lot on amplifiers but not a whole lot on radios, so I’m running out of ideas to troubleshoot.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what to do to repair this?

Welcome!

Please tell us what version of 60 you have and what run.

This is the article to find it out from.

https://philcoradio.com/library/index.ph...-model-60/

Now, when you say "no voltages", OK. Does that mean, not on the 8uF caps 45 and 46?

210VDC is low.

1. Remove every single tube And the rectifier.
2. Unplug/unsolder (what's applicable) the Field coil. Label/photograph the leads in citu before you do it.
3. Measure across the 1st and 2nd 8uF caps (##46/45). See if you have very low resistance/a short.

Check all tubes.
Check the rectifier tube.

Report here, then we will proceed.
A possible

Here’s some more info:
The 210v is only on the 8uf cap connected directly to the rectifier. The other measure a short to chassis ground.
With the rectifier and all tubes pulled there’s 746vac across the 2 narrow pins of tube 80.

I added a couple of pictures that say the model etc.
I’m not sure how to add photos in a quick reply.
Anyway with all tubes pulled this 746vac across the 2 thin pins of the rectifier tube 80.
With just the rectifier installed there’s 210vdc on the cap 46 and a short on 45

You cannot add photos in quick reply, use "new reply".

You should not be powering it up. I only said measure resistances, not voltages. You are not doing your tube and transformer any favours when you powerr it up with a short for the load.

It looks like your 8uF second cap (the 45, I think) is shorted.

Disconnect everything from this cap, confirm the short is right across it and is not present on the wires that solder to its "Plus".

Then replace it.

PS. What kind of caps did you use for teh replacements?
Mfr, exact P/N if possible, voltage/capacitance.

I have 2 x 10uf 500v IC caps for 45&46. They are not measuring as a short. They are new.
The lead off of 45 disconnected, is measuring a short
#7

Well, start tracing wher the short is.
Were you measuring towards the GND or towards the minusses of C45/C46?

Possible places (disconnect and measure):

1. Output transformer (not sure how), it does not touch GND
2. Socket of 42 tube, SG pin
3. Socket of 78, P pin (doubt it, you'd have some open coil 23)
4. C20 (0.01uF, in the sch shown near R22 and R19)
5. 6A7, P pin (same as before, doubt it.)
6. Field coil (doubt it, but who knows.)

Just go by the wire and trace it.

Again, it should be nit a short but 260 ohms or so if measured to the GND.

Follow up on this repair.
I found there was one more original cap still connected to the circuit that had shorted. Thought I took them all out, but I was wrong. The ‘filter condenser bank’ had one left.
Replaced it and the radio is working great again
Thanks for the help!

All is well that ends well.
