Rookie restorer
#1

I just acquired a Philco model 42-1006P - confirmed by the photo on this site. The radio works but the turn-table is missing. For now I will just be re-finishing as a conversation piece for my office. My hobby is woodworking - not radio restoration. I have a couple of questions.
1. What is the fake brown/redish zebra wood laminate (photo finish?) across the front (where the Philco decal is) and around the bottom and can I get access to this as it is flaking off.
2. I am assuming I can get a new decal for the front - reliable source?
3. I have the knobs but the escutcheon (plastic around the dial) has a corner chipped off (2" piece is gone) and probably needs to be replaced - are these available?

The rest of the cabinet wood is in good shape and I will have fun with it.

Any help you experts could provide would be invaluable as I am out of my comfort zone.

Other then trying to replicate that faux finish with paint or with some sort of water transfer paper there is a product called "Dinoc" that may work as a substitute, that is assuming it isn't real veneer, sometimes you can replace the faux stuff with real veneer. Philco name brand decals are available from several sources, companies that supply antique radio parts, AES and Radio Daze (don't know what their new name is) Depending on the escutcheon you may be able to find a reproduction one, if it has 8 or 9 holes for the pushbuttons you are in luck, if it has ten you will have to make something up or work with what's there.

Hi Chad,
Take a look at this section of the site:

http://www.philcoradio.com/phorum/showth...p?tid=3116

Ron has posted the info from the late Stewart Schooley, his methods for recreating a faux finish.
There is more than one way to do it, perhaps you can try one.
Good luck,

You do not have to use Kapton: buy a bottle of fabric glue and simply put a thick layer to fix the turns.morzh — 04:04 PM
