After more than a year - it is finished now.
Grill cloth is somewhat loose - I'll change that in the future.

More pictures will follow.
I tried to keep it as authentic, as possible, so kept part of the original finish and grill cloth.
It was also electronically restored.
Works perfectly. "Magnetic tuning" is fantastic. A lot of stations, big sound.

Very nice job! Just beautiful!
I have a 38-690 to restore also! I think it is going to be quite a while before I get it done. I'm looking for some of the old Philco paper caps for this radio suitable for re-stuffing, as some of the paper caps in my set had already been replaced by the time I got it.
If you have any from your set that you will not be re-stuffing, please let me know. You can find a list of the caps I'm missing in this thread.

Ed, nothing has left. I re-stuffed all paper caps in power supply chassis, even if part of them were good. As a matter of fact I saw a bunch of paper caps being sold on e-bay now. OK, it is German E-bay: http://cgi.ebay.de/320663200718

OK, thanks anyway. I will keep looking.

Beautiful job! One of my all time favorite radios. I tried to get one under the radar from an auction in Ohio about two weeks ago. I participated in the auction by phone along with another person from Pa. who also called in. Needless to say i didn't win. I think i may have been beaten by Willie, seeing how he just sold another one on E-bay. Oh well i will just have to keep looking.

The 38-690 is an impressive radio and yours is perhaps the best example I have seen. Very good work and thanks for sharing!
