Philco 41-608 Values of filter cap #21?
#1

Hi,
Again asking about this filter cap. Diagram not so clear and origianl cap has been replaced. What are the values supposed to be on this caps 3 sections? Looks like one is 8uf, other two at 16 or 17 uf. Are they all at 450 working voltage? Would 20uf be OK to use for all? I may try to stuff the can but never done this before. Since each of the 3 sections has a different point that it's negative lead is connected to, I would need to bring out a total of 6 lead wires I guess.

Is it possible to get 3 small lytics (radial or axial lead?) into that metal can? Do you try to fit them all together in the diameter or do you "stack" a couple? Sorry... new to these methods, etc.

One more question? When replacing wiring, what are pros / cons to using solid or stranded? I can see where stranded would be needed if the wire has to move at times as with a dial lamp that moves with adjusting the settings, etc.

Thanks much!

Hi Harlan

21 - 8 uF 250V
21A - 16 uF 350V
21B - 12 uF 450V

If you're going to restuff the original can, I would use 10 uF for 21 and 21B, 22 uF for 21A. Yes, it is possible to get all three into the can...you do whatever it takes to get them in...and make sure all is well insulated.

Solid wire will not stand up to very much flexing while stranded wire is, well, more flexible. Icon_smile Most, if not all, of the original under-chassis wiring used solid wire. It's up to you.
