Love those good old AA5s. I just finished a Philco Model B569. The plainest of the plain, bottom of the line in 1954. Took a whole hour. 6 new caps, a good scrub of the cabinet and the knobs and she looks and plays like new. On to the next one ......

I noticed while cleaning the shutter dial on my Zenith 12S568 that one of the bands says "Frequency Modulation". Was this set able to recieve the early FM band or was it just a fancy word for something else? There is also a switch on the back for "television".
When did the first FM sets start coming out? I don't deal much with FM era radio's as I like pre-war set's the best.

Working on an Emerson CS-270 and I think I have a bad tube and have a question on a 6K8GT. The tube tester says it's good but when I check the filament voltage.
I only get 3 volts not the 6 volts I should and the others show 7 volts. Replace the tube ?

This is probably a dumb question, but while replacing the rotted rubber coated wire in my Zenith 12S568 resto, I began to wonder. Was there a specific reason why radio manufacturers used rubber coated wire only in some parts of the set and cloth covered wire in the rest? Just curious and very glad the whole thing isn't wired with it. It's been a pain!

Hi Gang:

I have a neat little Zenith 723R, am/fm. Always a good sounding set, but is developing tons of static on AM picks up only 1-2 stations on AM where as before it was quite sensitive.

It has had capacitors switched out, resistors checked. Is there a tube in these little guys that has more impact on AM that could be a likely culprit? Still plays very well on FM. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Paul

I got a tip about an interesting radio on craigslist and set out yesterday morning to check it out. I came back with an All American Mohawk Corp Lyric radio!

According to an original ad it's a Seminole Spanish Vargueno console. $110 extra for AC operation!

It has a 10 tube TRF radio with 71A push-pull output.

The speaker is a Rola D-110 with copper oxide rectifier.

Anyone know the purpose of resistor 40 in the Philco 37-38? It appears to simply place a 10ma load on the C-9 battery! I see no other purpose. When the switch is ON, C+ is connected to the chassis ground, and C-9 is connected through the switch to resistor 40 (unless I am missing something!)

Was this to help sell Philco batteries? It certainly complicates powering this set from the usual ABC battery eliminator! When I restored my set, I had to build a separate C supply for C-9, and used my AES K-101A to provide the C-3 and the rest of the voltages.

Thanks!

Hello I am new to the forum.
I have been looking to try and find out a bit more about this radio set that I recently purchased from an online auction here in New Zealand.
I understand that the model numbers for units outside the United States don't follow the same pattern as the US models.
According to radiomuseum.org it was built from 1950
http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/philco_611_2.html

It is working and picks up local AM stations.

I will come clean at this point and state my intentions with this radio:
I am not an enthusiast on old radio's or Philco in particular, the purpose of my purchase was to try and find an old style radio cabinet that I could adapt into an active loudspeaker. Essentially I want to renovate the enclosure, remove the innards and replace with a Tripath digital amp and possibly a new loud speaker.

Before I do this heinous act I wanted to gauge whether the radio was worth something to somebody. I bought it for next to nothing on an auction site, there is another identical one, in apparently better condition but costs twice as much, still not a huge amount but it was located further away (so I could make a matching left and right speaker, but I would rather have two dissimilar ones).
I don't intend holding this one to ransom, I am not looking to make money by selling it on but I wanted to make sure that I won't regret dis-assembling the piece. If it would break anybodies heart for this to happen, where should I offer the whole thing or the electronic parts and tuner that I will not use for sale or collection?

The cabinet is in need of some renovation, it looks as though somebody has begun the task of sanding the top but not got far. There are some specs and smears of white paint in places. There is still the original hardboard back although none of the screws holding it in place match. The inside is an insect cocoon hotel. It doesn't appear to have been eaten by grubs and beetles.
There is a label on the back of the enclosure that is barely legible and looks like instructions to a service electrician on removing the back.
The knobs and tuning glass need a clean.
The speaker cloth is faded but not torn.
And finally the electronics work.

I will take some pictures if anybody would be interested seeing it.
