Recently bought one of these. Why did philco cut the AM band off at around 1600kc? Was there a good reason to do this?

Originally the AM band only went to 1600 kHz. The expanded AM band we have had for a while now is a new allocation, once the old ham band was moved off that area to open for more commercial ventures. I'm sure some one else can give more specific dates.

I don't believe the 160m HAM band has ever been lower than 1800/kc. From 1650 up to 1790/kc was the old police band and also used for LORAN around 1750/kc.
