There was a plan in the 1970s to move the USA to the metric system, like the rest of the world. It got cancelled in the '80s, so we still use miles, gallons, pounds, drams, gills, grains, bushels, knots, pecks, and other useful units of measure.
A few metric items survived, though. Your 5 grain aspirin tablet is now 325 mg, and you 4/5 quart whiskey bottle is 750 ml.
